Reza Zarrab in an unknown future

By: Khatereh Noorshid

What future holds for 33 year old Iranian /Turkish business man and his enterprise

Finally after long absence there are some news on Zarab’s whereabouts, although still no solid information about the progress on his case in the western media.

one might say since last meeting of Receb Teyib Ardogan with President Obama at the white house on 1st of April just before Zarrab second Hearing on 4th of April zarrab case procedure is swiping behind closed doors and is well kept away from Media.

The only thing I personally don’t understand is how in a open society like United State is possible to silence the media about an important news such as this?

Is quite clear that Turkish Authorities and specifically Ardogan the Prime Minister then and president of Turkey at the presence and his son and son in law were closely involved with the charges that Zarrab and others conspired to conduct hundreds of millions of dollars in financial transactions for the Iranian government or Turkish entities to evade U.S. sanctions.

However it seems like in an amendment made to the indictment last month, the office of the prosecutor did not include Turkey as part of the crime scene as yet. In the first indictment submitted to court on Dec. 15, 2015, it was stated that Zarrab’s network was in Turkey. It was also openly written that the crimes were committed outside the U.S.

The businessman was accused of being the ringleader of a money laundering and gold smuggling ring in Turkey that circumnavigated sanctions against Iran.
The charges were dismissed after the prosecutors investigating case were accused by the ruling party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), and then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of plotting against the government and removed from their posts.
Erdogan has described Zarrab as a “philanthropist” whose work had “contributed to the country”.

Reza Zarrab, the arrested Iranian-Turkish businessman in the United States, is being bussed from one place to the other, not flown. From Miami to New York, he is being transferred with several stops in American federal prisons. This must be huge psychological pressure on him.

Is clear that united state want to have Zarrab sentenced and they are preparing all information to enable juridical system to convict zarrab and others involved. It is believed Several people are eager to testify against Zarrab to the office of the prosecutor and provide information against him and others.

This investigation could carry on for months if not years to find all Zarrab connection and offshore leaks.

Considering the bribe charges on Zarrab in the Dec. 17, 2013, investigation, Turkish authorities might take that as an advantage in terms of Turkish-American relations. But surly after Reza Zarrab gives all the evidences, will be very difficult for Turkey to pull out its name out of Zarrab case,

More importantly, after Zarrab is convicted, the information given by him could and will work against Turkey and perhaps Washington will use these information to swap component against both Turkey and Iran.

Now we have to wait and see if united state is going to put some of big names in Turkish Government or political figures in wanted list after Zarrab is convicted.

Zarrab’s Father, Hossain Zarrab one of very close figures and supporter of Mahmood Ahmadinejad former president of Iran could be in acute situation, and definitely a huge opportunity for President Hassan Rouhani fighting hawks before the 2017 elections.

When and if Zarrab is swapped with Iran in exchange for long time missing American Robert ( Bob ) Levingston former FBI agent, will he be kept in same jail as Babak Zanjani ? His longtime friend and business partner.

He disappeared on March 9, 2007, when visiting Iran’s Kish Island while supposedly researching a cigarette smuggling case. Initially U.S. officials believed Levinson, kidnapped exactly two weeks before the 2007 Iranian seizure of Royal Navy personnel, was arrested by Iranian intelligence officials. However, every lead fizzled and Iran repeatedly denied any involvement in his disappearance. On December 12, 2013, the Associated Press reported that their investigations revealed that Levinson was working for the CIA contradicting the U.S.’s statement that he was not an employee of the government at the time of his capture.

In an interview, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani spoke of cooperation regarding Levinson’s case. “We are willing to help, and all the intelligence services in the region can come together to gather information about him to find his whereabouts.

Now all eyes in Turkish media and politic are on how the progress of Zarrab case and his given evidences could affect USA/ Turkish relationship.
